Police make appeal after teens spotted with loose dogs in East Bierley, Bradford
Bottom of Form.
Teenagers whose dogs are believed to have ripped the nose and jaw off a sheep are being hunted by police.
The sheep had to be put down after the grim discovery in East Bierley, Bradford, at around 3.30pm on Friday.
A group of teenagers with two dogs – believed to be a bull-lurcher and a terrier – were spotted in the area around the time of the incident.
It is believed they may have been hunting rabbits.
Kirklees Wildlife Crime Officer PC Caroline Newsome attended the incident.
PC Newsome said: "I took a call from a very distressed member of the public stating they’d found the sheep with its face ripped off – blood everywhere.
"I can’t imagine the suffering this poor ewe went through, and those responsible just callously left it.
"The ewe's nose had been completely ripped off, in one piece, complete with upper teeth.
"The farmer attended and was clearly upset and the ewe was taken away to end its misery."
PC Newsome has again urged dog owners to keep their pets on leads when walking near livestock.
She tweeted: "Why oh why, is it so difficult for some owners to put dogs on leads when walking near livestock? It could so easily have been avoided."
Retweeting PC Newsome's tweet, CuddlyRottyDog commented: "All dog owners or prospective dog owners should look at these pictures and remember that any dog is capable of worrying or killing livestock.
"Keep your dog under control and on a lead."
